I've had success when I can eat a variety of foods staying within calories/macros and I enjoy cooking and baking using mainly "clean" ingredients, would doing so affect the results I could get following the program?

If you've had success, you can certainly do whatever you like. In my experience, less variety makes calorie control and nailing the nutrition much easier. If you only have the last 5 pounds to lose, the more regimented your nutrition plan, the better. Then after you can add more variety. But this is up to you!
